It was a beautiful day for a walk and an amazing way to really surprise a special person, as more than 100 family, friends, and coworkers honored Lucretia “Rose” Bell-Willet, newly diagnosed breast cancer survivor, with a mini breast cancer walk on Sunday, June 13, 2021. Starting from the Titanic statue on the SW Waterfront, near 4th & P Streets, SW, and ending at the Duck Pond on 4th & I Streets, SW, the jubilant crowd, beautifully cladded in pink t-shirts adorned with inspiring breast cancer buttons and pins, bracelets, and masks, brought uncontrollable tears of joy to the eyes of Rose. Still wrought with emotions, Rose said: “I’m fighting this; cancer picked the wrong person!”
Organized by SW resident Arnice Mack, a long time close friend of Lucretia, Mack conveyed the event’s purpose to “show love and support for Lucretia” while reminding her that she and the rest of her huge support system would walk the journey with her. Thelma D. Jones Breast Cancer Fund Founder Thelma D. Jones briefly shared her journey and emphasized the importance of early detection, screening and genetic testing and counseling. A special thanks to the many supporters of the event, especially her family and colleagues from the DC Department of Recreation who were well represented. The event included prayers, tributes, music and dancing, and a fun-loving way to bring together a caring support system.
